The Art of the Side Hustle
Building a sustainable side-hustle, like a lot of things, is going to take time. Depending on the amount of freedom you desire/need in your life, that time may be longer or shorter. Some of the side-hustles I discuss in my book, A Life in Art: Building Side-Hustles to Empower Your Life as an Artist, are more similar to a day-job, but offer differing amounts of freedom.
A life of pursuing your art can be difficult. Don't lose sight of why you started. I've seen many friends settle into day-jobs and turn bitter, as the grind really took a number on them. It's nothing wrong with them. It just takes a lot of energy to sustain a day-job, pay your bills, and pursue your art.
Passion is what will sustain you through this journey. If you choose and build a side-hustle you enjoy, then you've got a great shot at building the life you desire. Along the way, always ask yourself why. Why are you doing this? Why do you need to pursue this art? Check in. Make sure you still agree with your answer. Don't stay miserable just to justify previous life choices.
I wouldn’t trade the path I’m on for anything. I travel a lot, I see the country, I meet a ton of interesting people – but there are downsides as well. It does me no good to ignore them, but it also doesn’t do me any good to let them drag me down. Life is meant to be lived - but what kind of life is up to you.
The ideal side-hustle scenario will incorporate the art you make. If not the art directly, some aspect of it. This is certainly not something you can always achieve in a day-job. But incorporating your art into your side-hustle is one way to make sure your side-hustle doesn't suck your soul.
You have to find things that aren't going to suck your soul. If you're miserable just trying to pay your bills, and you lose your passion for your art, then what's the point? It isn't easy to find the answer to supporting your life and leading your life, but it is possible.
