What is a Side-Hustle?
Here's the thing: you can take creative gigs and also pay your bills. Money doesn't have to be as tight as you think it does in order to live the life of an artist. You don't need to starve in order to live the creative life.
In the last 10 years, I've gotten two degrees and lived and worked in 7 states. It's been a long road, but I have successfully created a freelance career as an artist. I'm able to take the jobs that I want, in the places I want, and still get my bills paid on time. This comes from the side-hustle.
The side-hustle is exactly what it sounds like. A hustle to the side of whatever your primary focus is. I’m a writer, actor, and director who primarily works in theatre. You might be a painter, a musician, or a scenic designer. We’re all chasing the same thing: a way to make a living while pursuing our art. That art deserves fire, passion, and dedication. It also deserves our time.
The Internet has made this even easier to achieve. If you're an artist that needs to go where the work is, thinking towards my fellow theatre artists, this can be of particular use. Even if you don't need to go outside of your area for work, a side-hustle is able to open up your schedule to create the art you love. There are solutions for every lifestyle.
You shouldn’t have to starve to pursue your art. In the pages of my book you'll find tools that will guide you towards three square meals a day. That will guide you towards a regular income. That will give you the opportunity to fully pursue your art. If you choose the right side-hustle for you, they won’t suck your soul while you’re doing it.
Not Get Rich Quick
A side-hustle is not a get rich quick scheme. It's not even a rich scheme. You can scale any side-hustle to the level that you want, but that isn't really my interest in them. What I'm interested in is freeing up a lifestyle where you can pursue the art that feeds your soul.
