E-Lancing: Overview
Ultimately the goal of this blog and my book is
to help you build an income that will actually support you. Freelancing is
certainly not easy to do. Once you've figured out what skills you possess that
are marketable, then it does become a bit easier. It isn’t unlike putting
yourself out there as artist: what makes you marketable and unique? What makes
a company want to hire you?
When companies contract with
freelancers, what they’re looking for is someone who can enhance their bottom
line. Plain and simple, if they could do it better and cheaper in house, then
they probably would.
In many situations hiring a freelancer is an
appealing option for companies. For example, the project could be short term,
or a one-time thing. The company could also be experiencing rapid growth and
need to outsource some work as their operations expand. If you position
yourself correctly, then that expansion in operations might just be you. Of
course, that assumes that you would have an interest in taking a longer term
position with a company.
Many people are scared of the
uncertainty that comes with being a freelancer. Not always knowing where your
next paycheck is coming from can be a scary thing. Artists seem less worried
about this, in my own experience. Within our artistic careers, freelancing
isn't a new concept. You don't always know when your next show is, so you
hustle to find it. That same drive will serve you well in your side-hustle.
The beauty of freelancing is that
there are jobs of many different kinds available. From data entry to some
high-level jobs, there is something for every skill set. It’s just a matter of
finding the correct job market to find those jobs.
